10 Reasons Why You Should Start Playing Badminton

Badminton is quite simply one of the most awesome sports you can play. I used to play at college and gave up once I started working. Nearly 10 years ago I took it up again casually and about 3 years ago I decided I wanted to take it more seriously. I now play up to 4 times a week and I can’t think of a more fun way to spend my free time!

Are you a bit bored? Do you often just end up going home and vegging on the couch after a hard days work? Do you wish you had a way to get fit, have fun, vent your frustrations, and make some friends all in one go? If so, here are 10 reasons why I think you should put down that bowl of ready-made noodles and that can of duff beer and find yourself a local club to join!

1. Fun Fun Fun!

Badminton is organised fun for cool people. In fact we may just have to check out how cool you are before we let you join the club. If you aint cool we’ll put you through a coolness program first and then you might get to play if you pass the stringent tests that we have.

Ok calm down, I’m just kidding but badminton is seriously great fun. You can play singles if you wish, to increase your fitness, or you can play doubles if you want to have a bit more fun. It’s definitely more fun than Squash and unlike Tennis you can play all year around!

2. Social

If you join a club what you’ll find is that you’ll be off court occasionally. During the times you’re off court you’ll get to mingle, socialise and make loads of new friends. Or, if you’re a crazy ass mofo like me you can get a skipping rope and skip to keep the sweat going!

3. Pace

Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world bar none! Experienced players can smash the shuttle at speeds of over 200mph. When you learn to return those kinds of shots you get a serious rush! Just be warned though if a shot like that hits you in the head, you’ll walk around looking like you’re being targeted with a sniper rifle for a while!

4. Reflexes

With great power comes great responsibility and with badminton you will develop lightening quick reflexes. Because of badminton I once caught a mug full of coffee after I pushed it off the table; without spilling a drop!! It was totally surreal. Like that scene from Spiderman. Only I didn’t have Mary-Jane on my lap!

5. Fitness

If you like to sweat then badminton is for you! Yes you! With badminton you burn off the equivalent of a chocolate bar every 30 minutes or so. I’m not suggesting you eat a chocolate bar every 30 minutes to make sure you don’t waste away though! To see how much exactly you burn check out this table of stats. For someone like me, a 270lb’er who plays for 3 hours at a time, I could eat a horse every hour and still not worry about it going to my thighs or buttocks.

6. Agility

With badminton you have to learn to get from one side of the court to the other extremely quickly and so after a while you develop the agility of a cat. Meow!

7. Competition

You can keep it a strictly social thing but if you like to be compeitive then chances are your club might be part of a league. If so you’ll get to compete against other clubs and kick some ass and do some victory dances that you and your team mates have made up. I recommend the conga or the locomotion!

8. Cost

Badminton isn’t the cheapest sport but it doesn’t really break the bank either. The biggest cost is usually the shuttles. When you join a club the cost of the shuttles may be included and so you may not even notice your wallet get lighter.

9. Spectating

I’m not really one for living life as a spectator but badminton is one sport I could happily watch for hours. There are tournaments all year round, big and small so have a look around and also get yourself down to the All England if you’re in the UK.

10. Skills

Whilst also learning to hit the shuttle at speeds that would even make a red Ferrari blush and resemble a slug, you will also develop the softest touch. You will be able to just drop the shuttle over the net so it trickles over and hits the ground quicker than your opponent can say ‘ZOIKS SCOOBY’! Just check this clip of Peter Gade and his legendary trick shot. So COOL!

Maybe I'm a bit one-sided for posting the likes of Reiko Shiota and Wang Lin, the beauties in the pro badminton world (see Crush post). Well, I did a little research to satisfy the other sex.

If Kaka watches tennis because of the "cute gorgeous guys," then maybe ... just maybe below would be reason enough to also watch badminton matches.

The long-standing debate about badminton versus tennis never ends.

It'll be a never-ending discussion so I opted not to state my opinion as this blog represents the League of Badminton Masters players generally and not me.

But for the LBM players who are also tennis fans, there's an article recently posted in http://jumpsmashbadminton.blogspot.com/2009/07/badminton-v-tennis.html. Batman, May, Aries, etc., I know you guys are die-hard tennis fans, so I am guessing that you'd be interested in hearing out a blogger's opinion.

The article is a good read, but let's put a disclaimer: All the data written on the linked blog above do not represent our site. The articles written there are of the author's opinion and were not inluenced by any of the members of this blog. Hehehehe. There you go.

Congratulations to the following Pinoys for making it to the quarterfinals:

WS - Malvinne Ann Venice Alcala
MD - Kelving Panganiban/Gabriel Villanueva
XD - Trikus Harjanto (IND)/Minarti Timur (PHI)

Alcala and Panganiban/Villanueve advanced to the quarters by beating other Filipinos. The rest of the Pinoys lost to other countries, except for the Indonesia-Philippine tandem Trikus/Minarti.

Minarti wasn't really born a Filipina. She used to represent Indonesia but migrated hear to coach and run a badminton club business. She's now 41 years old, with Trikus 35 years old, just a few years shy. They're the oldest pair in the tournament.

During their days, they were piled among the best mixed doubles pairs, winning several titles including the Thailand (1994), Indonesia (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001), Singapore (1995, 1998), Malaysia (1996, 1998, 2000), and Chinese Taipei (2002) Opens; the Badminton World Cup (1995); the World Badminton Grand Prix (1995); the Southeast Asian Games (1995); and the Badminton Asia Championships (1996).

It seems like they haven't lost their "mojo". c",)

Actually, one way or another, all the Filipino palyers will be competing with seeded players in the early rounds. It's gonna be tough for them, so let's hope they make it to the finals.

Korean Men's Doubles Journey in the Indonesian Open 2009

SEMIFINALS

Years ago, badminton legend Park Joo Bong predicted Lee Yong Dae would cause a sensation on the scene, and this year Lee (pictured, with Jung Jae Sung) has experienced a short stint as men's doubles world #1 and is presently the mixed world #1, and tellingly having usurped both top spots off Indonesians. Now he finds himself in both finals at the Indonesia Open on a day when China is still poised for a near-sweep and Taufik Hidayat is the lone hope for local glory.

FINALS

Men's Doubles: Defence over Offence

It was Lee Yong Dae's (pictured on the right) night as he partnered Jung Jae Sung to wipe out the Indonesian challenge in men's doubles. The Korean defences were simply too good for Kido/Setiwan's constant onslaught, the shuttle on most occasions refusing to hit the ground on the Korean's side of the court. At one juncture in the first game, the Indonesians conceded 7 points in a single service to find themselves behind 10-17.

The fantastic defence by the Koreans continued frustrating the Indonesians after they swapped ends. The match wrapped up 21-19, 21-17. Five times in a row Kido/Hendra have lost from Lee/Jung and of the latest occasion the despairing team admitted that “the hardest part of the game was receiving Lee's serve which is very close to the net and difficult to return”.

Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, who came back from a game down to put away Malaysia's Koo/Tan, had thought it would be a Beijing Olympics rematch of the final but it was not to be. Instead, the shoe will be on the other foot for Lee Yong Dae, as he prepares to meet his nemeses from China. He and Lee Hyo Jung are now 0:4 against Ma/Zheng while Lee and Jung Jae Sung have beaten Fu/Cai only twice in eight meetings.

FINALS FATE

It is no mean feat to be in 2 finals and it will take stamina and mental management one more time - in fact twice. Lee Yong Dae's greatness will be tested in these battles against past champions and both from China. It's not the height of the hurdle but jumping over it many times that is tough and the last one is always a killer as one races to the finish line.

Korea last won the men's doubles here in 2002 with Lee Dong Soo/Yoo Yong Sung and the mixed doubles in 2003 with Ra Kyung Min/Kim Dong Moon, but either way, overcoming the Chinese opposition or repeating these feats in the same night are big shoes to fill. None of the versatile doubles specialists from China or Korea have ever won two titles here in one year. Eddy Hartono and Christian Hadinanta are alone in that category. Meanwhile, China, beyond merely stopping Lee's double effort, is no doubt intent on a clean sweep of all but men's singles on Sunday night.
